Opened in 1998, this multi-year, award-winning 27-hole, upscale, resort-quality public golf facility in San Jose’s western hills enjoys a reputation for high-quality golf, a first-rate clubhouse and outstanding facilities for meetings, weddings and tournaments.
Noted golf course architect John Harbottle III developed three interesting and challenging nines -– Canyon, Lake and Mountain -– each featuring rolling terrain, natural hazards and spectacular views. The fairways and greens are extremely well-maintained. Each hole features four sets of tees with yardage varying from 4,800 to 6,800, and the course is designed to accommodate varying levels of skill.
Although several holes are notable, many consider 222-yard, par-3 Number 8 on the Canyon course to be the signature hole. Located on the highest point of the property, the Eighth at Canyon offers panoramic views of the Coyote Valley and is as challenging as it is breathtaking.
Cinnabar Hills was named after the region’s red cinnabar ore from which mercury was extracted to process gold during and after the California gold rush. While the history of mercury mining is covered in a nearby museum, the clubhouse offers the Brandenburg Historic Golf Museum. The thousands of exhibits include historical photographs, President Eisenhower’s Masters Jacket and numerous items from the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. (www.cinnabarhills.com)
